What Does Homeowners' Insurance Cover?

If you were recently injured on someone else’s residential property, you may be wondering what homeowners insurance covers and for good reason! In reality, there are countless ways that someone can get injured on another person’s property. Just a few examples include swimming pool accidents, slip and fall injuries, falling off of someone’s roof, falling downstairs, getting bitten by a dog, sexual assault, spider bites, and so on.

Suppose you were seriously injured while visiting someone else’s home. This individual could be a neighbor, a close friend, a family member, a mutual friend, or even a client. You were injured unexpectedly and now it’s costing you. The medical bills are rolling in and perhaps you’ve even lost work and been in a lot of pain. What avenues do you have for compensation and can you file a claim against the person’s homeowners' insurance?

Will the Homeowners' Insurance Cover You?

Whenever an injury occurs at a private residence, one of the first places we look for compensation is the homeowner’s insurance policy. But what is homeowners' insurance exactly? Allstate says homeowners' insurance is made up of coverages that may help the homeowner pay to repair or replace their home and their belongings that have been damaged by certain perils, including theft and fire.

“It may also cover costs if you accidentally damage another person’s property or if a visitor is injured at your home,” according to Allstate. Typically, homeowners insurance covers the homeowner’s dwelling, other structures on their property, personal property, and liability for injuries to another person who was on the homeowner’s property.

“A typical homeowners insurance policy provides liability coverage when someone not living with you is injured while on your property. Suppose a visitor trips over your broken porch step. Bodily injury liability coverage may help pay for your resulting legal expenses or the visitor's associated medical bills if you are found at fault.”
